Joe Yates is a programmer with 15 years of experience in software development on the desktop and Web platforms, and develops software for areas ranging right from business to culture to research. While his main focus is on projects based on Ruby (in Sinatra and Ruby on Rails), he mixes in other languages (such as Python, JavaScript/Node.js, and Clojure) when appropriate and is developing an interest in the area of DevOps using Chef.

He is based in Italy and works as a consultant. He also develops projects for various companies across Europe.

straight to the point

The best advantage points of Sinatra reside in education/training and prototyping. Its small footprint and easy to read source code is an excellent starting point from whoever is interested in learning a web framework internals. Moreover, its approach based on simplicity and immediacy help us in producing proof of concept and prototype application.

Seldom I've found short to read and quick to be productive resources on that topic; after reading the ebook "Sinatra Starter" by Joe Yates, I've found really (condensed) great stuff inside it.

The book starts with clear instructions on how to install Sinatra and be quickly able to write our own webapp "bare to metal". But that is not the only thing you'll learn here...

In fact the book provides us also hints on how to approach building our web app in systematic way. I mean throughout the reading we learn just enough to play with Git and Github to versioning our code, Heroku to deploy our webapp and RSpec to test it.

Moreover, some important aspects are touched (not deeply cause the book short size, but anyway interesting): application modularity; Rack usage; how to layout a Sinatra project; how to use sessions; how to handle forms, route and request parameters; how to send emails; how to log application data; how to connect to a data base; useful weblinks on Sinatra world.

The "Short, Fast, Focused" caption on the cover page is really fitting!

Good intro to Sinatra

Expected something more from this book. The writing style is confusing. Other Starter Packt books are generally based on easy to follow tutirials - but this seems different. At some point readers may be lost. At the end it provided reference to some functions of Sinatra which is the most boring part. However, books on Sinatra are rare and this will help someone like me to learn or at least be interested in Sinatra.

About the Author

Chris Scarre is an archaeologist specializing in the prehistory of Europe and the Mediterranean, with a particular interest in the archaeology of Atlantic fa�ade (Iberia, France, Britain, and Ireland). He took his MA and PhD at Cambridge, the latter a study of landscape change and archaeological sites in western France. He has participated in fieldwork projects in Britain, France, and Greece and has directed excavations at Neolithic settlement and mortuary sites in western France. His early work was published in Ancient France. He is currently Deputy Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, and editor of the twice-yearly Cambridge Archaeological Journal. As a Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge, he teaches a wide range of archaeological subjects from early stone use in the Paleolithic to the expansion of the Roman Empire.
�� His research interests include the relationship of prehistoric monuments to their landscape setting, the use of color in prehistoric societies, and the development and character of early state societies. Recent papers have considered the meanings that prehistoric societies may have attached to natural landscape features in Brittany, and the manner in which those meanings were given material expression through the construction of burial mounds or settings of standing stones. The nature of early farming societies along the Atlantic fa�ade in relation to theories of demographic displacement is reviewed in a number of articles published since 1992. His latest field project is the excavation (together with French colleagues) of a prehistoric burial mound at Priss�-la-Charri�re in western France.
�� As Deputy Director of the McDonald Institute he is involved with the wider research programs of the Institute that include field projects in Europe and the Middle East and laboratories specializing in the analysis of faunal and botanical remains.

Brian Fagan is one of the leading archaeological writers in the world and an internationally recognized authority on world prehistory. He studied archaeology and anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, and then spent seven years in sub-Saharan Africa working in museums and in monument conservation and excavating early farming sites in Zambia and East Africa. He was one of the pioneers of multidisciplinary African history in the 1960s. From 1967 to 2003, he was Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he specialized in lecturing and writing about archaeology to wide audiences. He is now Emeritus.
�� Professor Fagan has written six best-selling textbooks apart from this book: Ancient Lives: An Introduction to Archaeology; In the Beginning; Archaeology: A Brief Introduction; People of the Earth;World Prehistory, all published by Prentice Hall–that are used around the world. His general books include The Rape of the Nile, a classic history of Egyptology; The Adventure of Archaeology;Time Detectives;Ancient North America;The Little Ice Age, The Long Summer, and Fish on Friday. He is General Editor of the Oxford Companion to Archaeology. In addition, he has published several scholarly monographs on African archaeology and numerous specialized articles in national and international journals. He is also an expert on multimedia teaching and has received the Society for American Archaeology’s first Public Education Award for his indefatigable efforts on behalf of archaeology and education.

Horrible condition, not "good"

I bought this book used because it is expensive new,and it said that it was in good condition. The book is in horrible condition! A piece of the front cover is missing, and it is barely hanging on. The pages are ripped and dirty. I feel completely ripped off for what I paid!

Not so bad!

Even though my teacher didn't really require this book, I read quite a bit of it just to find out what it was about. It wasn't too shabby, written clearly and overall a decent read. If you get it for class and you end up using it, it's not going to bore you to death, and it should be beneficial overall.

Sound advice

Fear is endemic to the human condition. It's a natural response that we develop to things that threaten us. At times fear is justified. However, our tendency is to let fear keep us from accomplishing those things that we really want to do. In a phrase, it keeps us from "living our dream."

Written in a conversational style, Nathalie Thompson's "fearLESS" tells you how you can overcome your fear so that you can truly accomplish those things that you want to do. In a book of some 200 pages she deals with the matter of self-sabotage, negative messages well tell ourselves, primary versus secondary fears, the fear of failure, the problem with perfectionism, the fear of success, the fear of judgment, and the fear of the unknown. She also presents strategies for "fearLESSness" (such as breaking negative thought habits and identifying resistance). Her last two chapters are, "The Other Side of Fear" and "A Life Less Ordinary," in which she presents a vision for how we might live our dream once we have conquered fear.

Each chapter ends with a recap of that chapter, which includes "Key Points to Remember" and "Your Action Items." (The latter are exercises for you to do that will help you to become a fearLESS person.) Also at the end of each chapter is a link where you can download bonus material.

Practical, Useful and no hard sell

“fearLESS: How to Conquer Your Fear, Stop Playing Small, and Start Living an Extraordinary Life You Love” by Nathalie Thompson, on initial glance may seem like a standard “self-help” style book, but it is much more. For a start it is honest, easy to read and easy to relate to. It is a guide to help individuals examine what personally held beliefs they have which may be holding them back. The emphasis is on reflection, making an effort, and putting in the work.

There are no promises of instant success, no “hard sell”, no “buy my program” or “buy my expensive set of guides”, no constant attribution of success to the worship of a particular deity or adherence to a system of belief, and best of all the book is not full of “sickening” stories about how wonderful, successful and brilliant the author is (and no glamour photos of her, trophy spouse or perfect children – seen that before!) For those wanting more, there is a link to the author’s blog and to FREE work sheets to help with the suggested exercises in the book.

This guide is designed for ordinary people wanting to make more out of their lives, regardless of how big or small their dream may be. Well worth a look.

An Excellent Book For Changing Your Life

fearLESS: How to Conquer Your Fear, Stop Playing Small, and Start Living an Extraordinary Life You Love I found this book to be entertaining, educational, and extremely helpful. The author makes the book very personal, yet professional. She relates how the death of her father forced her to re-evaluate her life course. With that reflection, the author explains how she developed new insights and changed her life. With this book, she asks the readers if they are living the lives that they want? The author encourages the readers to address their personal fears, clarify their dreams, and then tackle the challenges of creating a new life. To help the readers the author offers a how-to-manual with specific chapters devoted to certain fears and well defined obstacles. With these chapters, I really liked her action items and her links. For anyone who wants to live, not just exist, this is a great book!

Large trucks, trains, planes, and ships cannot run on batteries, and electricity to run them is difficult, expensive and often impossible.

Filled with perversity and violence. You know, the good stuff.

I'm a huge fan of Gwar and I was happy to read this one from the late, great Dave Brockie (AKA Oderus Urungus). It's all over the place and huge chunks of it are barely coherent, but it's a lot of fun if you're into crazy gore violence.

It's like reading a non-linear William S. Burroughs novel crossed with a Warhammer 40K novel crossed with some sort of B-horror franchise. But written by someone who sat in front of the History Channel high as a kite, watching WWII documentaries in between doses of lithium.

I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because, well, come on, this is not exactly a Pulitzer candidate. But it is worth a read, especially if you're a Gwar fan.

Clear, practical advice

I'm not a lawyer; I'm a mathematician. I know I'm not a great writer, but I'm working hard to become a better writer. "Legal Writing in Plain English" is filled with clear, practical advice. Garner's advice is easier to apply than Flesch's Art of Plain Talk, the first book that I read on plain English. I like that Garner focuses on the worst offenders; for example, suggesting we change "-ion" words rather than declaring a war on all affixes and asking us to check every "of" for rephrasing rather than every preposition. This is important when, like me, you only have three to four productive hours a day and you just don't have the time to worry about every preposition and affix.

I strongly recommend both "Legal Writing in Plain English" and Garner's Modern American Usage.

It is what it is: a great resource and self-instructional device

In this book published by the University of Chicago Press, Bryan Garner has assembled an interesting collection of exercises and instructions. He focuses a good deal of attention at the outset on how one should "frame one's thoughts" on a subject, and then proceeds to enhance our understanding of sentence phrasing options and word choices. I especially enjoyed this preferatory work-up. We can all use this - for initial learning or for refreshing and revising our approaches. He includes principles for legal drafting, while also going into the detail of document design, discussing American standards - both those we might keep and those that should be abandoned. The great strengths in Garner's materials are that (1) he takes good firm positions on what is best-usage in legal English, (2) he explains clearly why, and (3) his own prose is fun to read. If one has the time to devote, this is a wonderful book for the advanced student, learner and legal practitioner.

Indispensable

This book will teach you how to write clearly and precisely. I improved the readability of my memos by correctly using lists, footnotes, single spacing, sentence length, white space, powerful verbs, active voice, and proper grammar. You may think you already know how to use these correctly, but I guarantee this book will pleasantly surprise you. Of course, seemingly unnecessary legalese is often still required (i.e. transactional law). Nevertheless, you will find that even statute drafters and judges have begun adopting these techniques. If the textualist Scalia trusts Garner as a co-author of Reading Law, he can't be too shabby.

Recent years have seen a very marked increase in the desire to protect the environment from any and all malign influences. The maintenance or restoration of water quality is a vital part of that protection. A sine qua non of control system development for modern sewer networks is therefore the preservation of the water system around a network’s outflow(s). Several approaches have been proposed for the optimisation of sewage control and Optimal Real-time Control of Sewer Networks provides a comparative synthesis of a central sewer network flow control based on two of these: nonlinear-optimal and multivariable-feedback control.

In nonlinear optimal control, control and operational objectives are treated directly by the formulation of a nonlinear cost function minimized according to system constraints and the relevant state equation. The comparison presented uses the rolling horizon method for the real-time application of the optimal control algorithm with updated inflow predictions and updated initial conditions.

On the other hand, the linear multivariable feedback regulator – considered with and without feedforward terms to account for external inflows – is developed via a systematic linear-quadratic procedure including precise specifications on model structure, equations and the choice of nominal steady state and quadratic criterion.

The comprehensive testing and comparison of these protocols is undertaken on the basis of their respective control results for the real large-scale sewer network located around the river Obere Iller in Bavaria. The control strategies now implemented within this network are based on this study.

About the Author

Magdalene Marinaki was born in Chania, Greece. In 1993, she received the Dipl.- Eng. degree in Production Engineering and Management from the Technical University of Crete, Greece, while she received the M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees in Production Engineering and Management from the same University in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

She received a scholarship by the Institute of National Scholarships and the Technical Chamber of Greece in the academic year 1991-1992 for high performance in her studies. Since March 1994, she has been a Research and Teaching Associate of the Dynamic Systems and Simulation Laboratory of the Technical University of Crete. She has participated in research projects and she has assisted undergraduate courses. Since September 2000, she has been teaching at the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Branch of Chania. Since September 2002, she has been a contract lecturer at the Technical University of Crete, Department of Production Engineering and Management. She is the author of research reports and papers in international journals and scientific conferences. Her research interests include optimal and automatic control, operations research and applications to water systems, transportation systems and further areas. She is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).

Markos Papageorgiou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1953. He received the Diplom-Ingenieur and Doktor-Ingenieur (honors) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, in 1976 and 1981, respectively. From 1976 to 1982 he was a Research and Teaching Assistant at the Control Engineering Chair, Technical University of Munich. He was a Free Associate with Dorsch Consult, Munich (1982-1988), and with Institute National de Recherche sur les Transports et leur S�curit� (INRETS), Arcueil, France (1986-1988). From 1988 to 1994 he was a Professor of Automation at the Technical University of Munich. Since 1994 he has been a Professor at the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece. He was a Visiting Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy (1982), at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chauss�es, Paris (1985-1987), and at MIT, Cambridge (1997, 2000); and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Minnesota (1991, 1993), University of Southern California (1993) and the University of California, Berkeley (1993, 1997, 2001).

Dr. Papageorgiou is the author of the books Applications of Automatic Control Concepts to Traffic Flow Modeling and Control (Springer, 1983) and Optimierung (Oldenbourg, 1991; 1996), the editor of the Concise Encyclopedia of Traffic and Transportation Systems (Pergamon Press, 1991), and the author or co-author of some 230 technical papers. His research interests include automatic control and optimization theory and applications to traffic and transportation systems, water systems and further areas. He is an Associate Editor of Transportation Research-Part C, of IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems and a member�of the IEEE Control System Society, Conference Editorial Board, and Chairman of the IFAC Technical Committee on Transportation Systems. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) and a Fellow of IEEE. He received a DAAD scholarship (1971-1976), the 1983 Eugen-Hartmann award from the Union of German Engineers (VDI), and a Fulbright Lecturing/Research Award (1997).
