Catalogue of Richardson's obsessions and sexlife in the early 2000's (possibly also late 1990's) - does not necessarily reflect his life today, but was fodder for the "Terry is a pig" campaign of a couple years ago. The Ultimate Terry Richardson Book

This book is a must have for any Terry Richardson fan. I've always wanted to see Terry's private photo collection at his New York studio. And with this type of book, that's exactly what you get. The book is pretty large, and is about the same size as the book: 'Terryworld'. If you own TerryWorld Then you kind of know, what to expect from Terry.

Some of the x-rated photos in Terryworld appear in Kibosh plus many, many, many, more. The rest of the images are never before seen photographs of Terry Richardson having the time of his life with various women and friends. I would say all 320 pages are full color x-rated photographs. The book is not cheap but if your debating on the price, you have to remember there is not that many editions currently on the market, it's truly a unique piece of work. And is totally worth every penny. I still can't believe I got my hands on one. I collect various coffee table books, and this one is my favorite at the moment. The cover and the typography is a black on black design, which creates a sense of mystery and curiosity for friends or guest to open the book. It's interesting but also funny when guest open the book, definitely an ice breaker.

The book is not intended for everyone and may be offensive to some viewers. Remember to do your homework on who the photographer is. Overall this is a must have if your a fan of Terry Richardson or collect awesome coffee table books.

I waited for some time to purchase this book, and finally did. Worth it! I am a big fan of Terry Richardson, even in light of the controversy surrounding his earlier work and rumored-methods.

The photography itself is very appealing! I would only point up that, in view of his statement at the start that he would not ask a subject to do anything he would not, he certainly did not pose or perform in ways that made him equally vulnerable to his subjects or the viewer. Very FEW straight-identifying males would decline the role of "Terry Richardson" in these photos!

I still love every page of the book.

It's Magic!

Back in the 1950s when I was a kid, my father bought me a Heathkit crystal set that I had to assemble myself. I enjoyed the assembly, but couldn't believe it would work because there was no power source: No batteries, no cord to a wall outlet, no transformer. You just strung one long piece of wire for an antenna and a second wire for a ground and you were done.

When I plugged in the earphones, I was mesmerized. It was magical! I could hear radio broadcasts! We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area then and I spent countless nights drifting off to sleep listening to the Giants baseball team.

Since my retirement, I've rekindled my interest in crystal radios and this book has made the magic reappear for me: I've used it over the past several years to build several crystal sets, each special in its own way. And every time I look at the book, I refine my understanding just a little bit more.

I need to make several additional points:

1) The title (Radios That Work For Free) is a clever description of the final product: once you've completed one of the crystal sets, they work for free. That is, they capture energy from the radio waves that are all around us and use that energy to create an audible signal. As I say, no power other than the waves themselves. How cool is that?

2) The instructions are clear and, viewed simply as a set of recipes, the book stands as well worth the purchase. But Radios That Work for Free is much more: it explains in simple terms the conceptual underpinnings of what each part of the radio system does (AM transmitter, the radio waves it produces, the antenna, the coil, the capacitor, the diode and the earphones).

If you understand how each of these elements works, you will be well on your way to understanding the conceptual framework of radio receivers.

3) In the sense of 2) above, crystal radios are primitive. And by building one and listening to it you will become immersed in a kind of history that few experience.

Think about it: There was a time about a century ago when crystal sets were cutting-edge technology. The people who listened to sets of this kind were able to touch the future and wonder at the present. To me, there is a certain romance in experiencing the same kind of magic as our forebearers did: these sets are no less marvelous today than they were when they first appeared. Perhaps they are more impressive.

4) The book and its projects is a wonderful way to introduce youngsters to science. How many of us have had science projects that "almost/should have" worked but didn't quite? The crystal sets here will work if built as instructed. Period.

5) For a parent, the book and the instructions it provides a wonderful way to collaborate with a child in building something that will work. The memories for both child and parent will last a lifetime.

If you have any interest at all in basic science; if you want a project to enjoy with your child; if you want the thrill of experiencing a little magic first-hand; if you are an incurable romantic who wants to experience what the ancients of the early 20th C did — then buy the book.

Innoculated by a Diode

This review of “Radios that Work for Free” is a slam-dunk because, for anyone that does not already know, it is common knowledge by everyone in the hobby of building crystal radios that “Radios that Work for Free” is far and away the very best book ever published comprising the start-to-finish radio theory; circuit suggestions, explanations, and tricks; photographs, diagrams and lists; details and explanations of components; suggested, practical, construction projects; motivational excitement; and everything else one needs to know in order to build and operate a crystal radio set, and to well know just exactly how and why a crystal radio and many other radios work.

As a Boy Scout in the 1950s, I built and rebuilt crystal radios and fox-hole radios over 25 years before this book was published because, somewhere along the way, I had been inoculated by a diode, and I can assure you my crystal-radio experience would have had many fewer hard knocks had I had K. E. Edwards’ “Radios that Work for Free” in hand before I started. With the start in learning radio theory afforded by having built and rebuilt crystal radios, I later built tube and then transistor radios, and, in August 1976, passed the Federal Communication Commission license examination for the issuance to me of ham radio station license and operator callsign of WB5YJN, which I still have.

Nevertheless, I also noticed and bought “Radios that Work for Free” in the early 1980s, and one of my sons and I built the most simple crystal radio K. E. Edwards’ shows, on page 4, in “Radios that Work for Free.” That crystal radio worked great and, consequently, my son also had been inoculated by a diode. Next, he had to have a science fair project at his school and decided he would build the Third Crystal Set Project, detailed on page 108 of “Radios that Work for Free,” which happened to be a short-wave crystal radio! Yes, a short-wave crystal radio. I had never built a short-wave crystal radio and I explained to him that about all I could do would be to show up and help him grunt. He followed Chapter 17 in “Radios that Work for Free” and without any problem had a working short-wave crystal radio set that received the BBC, Radio Moscow, Radio Havana, the Voice of America, Radio Nederland, Deutsche Welle Radio, and others. You owe it to yourself to build this short wave crystal radio just for the fun of it and to keep it by your bed just for even more fun listening to it work for free.

Even if you mistakenly think the Internet has completely replaced radio, or even if you are an Extra Class ham-radio operator, or even if your hobby is collecting only original orchestral soundtrack movie music composed by giants the likes of John Williams, James Horner, Bill Conti, Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, and others, then do yourself a big favor, buy K. E. Edwards’ “Radios that Work for Free,” and build just the crystal radio set shown on page 4. I guarandamntee you that you too will be inoculated by a diode!

Another book that does a much better job explaining the theory and showing you how to build the components from scratch is The Voice of The Crystal by H. Peter Friedrichs. Buy that book instead. About the Author
Professor Emeritus K.A. (Ton) Schat received his veterinary degree from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1970 and his PhD degree in Virology from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1978. He joined the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University in 1978, where he remained until his retirement in 2011. His research focused on the immunology and pathogenesis of viral diseases of poultry, especially Marek’s disease and chicken infectious anemia. He has published over 165 papers in peer-reviewed journals and more than 30 book chapters. His contributions to avian disease research were recognized with the Upjohn Achievement Award of the AAAP in1986, the Dr. Bart Rispens Research Award of the WVPA in 1987, the Pfizer Award for Excellence in Poultry Research of the AVMA in 1999, and the Merck Award for Achievement in Poultry Science of the PSA in 2005. In 2010 he was recognized by his peers with a special award for outstanding research in the field of Marek’s disease. He is a founding member of the Hall of Honour of the World Veterinary Poultry Association.

Bernd Kaspers graduated as a veterinarian in 1986 at the University of Munich and completed his doctoral thesis (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) in 1989. He subsequently worked as a post-doc at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Livestock and Poultry Sciences Institute, Beltsville, MD, USA and returned to the University of Munich in 1992 where he became a full Professor for Animal Physiology in 1997.
Since his dissertation he has focused on avian immuno-physiology investigating B-lymphocyte biology, cytokines and the mucosal immune system in chickens. This work included studies on a range of infection models such as avian coccidiosis, avian influenza, Marek’s Disease and Salmonella infections. His research is documented in more than 85 publications in peer-reviewed journals, several reviews and book chapters.

His work is funded by grants from the German Research Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the European Union and through several co-operations with the poultry and vaccine industry.

Bernd Kaspers is member of the German Society for Immunology and as such has been speaker of the Veterinary Immunology Study Group of the society for the last 6 years. In 2004 he hosted together with Thomas Goebel the 8th Avian Immunology Research Group Meeting in Munich with more than 120 participants.

Professor Pete Kaiser is Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity and Chair in Animal Infectious Diseases at The Roslin Institute & R(D)SVS, University of Edinburgh. He is also Head of the newly established National Avian Research Facility at Roslin.
He has published over 130 primary research papers and holds 3 patents, primarily in avian immunology and genetics, and is currently supported by grants from the BBSRC, EU, industry and charities. He has won competitive funding totalling over �5M since joining The Roslin Institute in 2010. He holds visiting appointments at the Universities of Queensland and Liverpool and is on the Editorial Boards of 6 journals. He is a trustee of the Houghton Trust and serves on several BBSRC working and advisory groups. In 2009 he was awarded the Houghton Lecture at the World Veterinary Poultry Association meeting in Morocco. Industrial collaborators include Zoetis Animal Health, CEVA Sante Animale, HyLine, Cobb-Vantress and Aviagen.

About the Author
Liana Lowenstein, MSW, is an author, sought-after speaker, and practitioner with over 22 years of specialized work with children, adolescents and families. She provides clinical supervision to mental health practitioners and consults to several mental health agencies. She has a reputation as a dynamic workshop leader and has presented trainings across North America and abroad. She is a Certified Child Psychotherapist-Supervisor and she serves on the board of the Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT). She is founder of Champion Press Publishing Company and has authored or edited numerous publications including the highly-acclaimed books, Paper Dolls & Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children (with Crisci & Lay, 1997), Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth (1999), More Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth (2002), Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (2006), and Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children (2006), Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families: Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Techniques (Volume One published in 2008, Volume Two published in 2010) and Creative Family Therapy Techniques (2010). A Wonderful Resource

This book is perfect for anyone working with at-risk children and adolescents. As a child therapist, I found that the activities helped to engage even children who are highly reluctant to engage in therapy. There are a wide variety of activities in the book that range in age from preschool to teenager and address just about every treatment issue you could think of. Most important, the activities are fun for the kids while also being therapeutic. I would highly recommend this book-- it's worth every penny.

Immediately put to use!

This is a book that a therapist can put to use immediately. It is extemely well-organized:

-chapters divided by topics

-a chart indicating activities for each stage of therapy, modality and age

-clear directions included with each activity

Many of the pages are reproducible, and most of the activities require materials that are easy to find. Best of all, the activities are clearly therapeutic!

My only complaint (and it's minor so I'm not removing any stars) is that several activities involve candy. Since I work with elementary students in a district that has implemented the federal nutrition guidelines, I cannot give students candy nor can I give any food as a reward. Some of those activities can be "tweaked" so that I give stickers instead. However, that's a very minor point, and overall, the book is a fabulous resource!

Don't miss Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes, a similar book co-authored by Lowenstein, that contains extensive activities for pre-schoolers, elementary children and teens who have been sexually abused.

Another Great Book!

This book and the prequel "Creative Interventions" are the two most used books are my bookshelf! The activities are child friendly, fun and engaging. The book is well organized and user friendly. This book is a must have for any working with children. I highly recommend it!
