I won't waste money on another Rhyme book

Jeffrey Deaver is getting desperate. Lincoln is an A # 1 nothing now.. The least Deaver could do is make Rhyme a little more human instead of having him being a snot. Skin Collector! What next? The Recipe Collector. His plot lines are so predictable now. There are no surprises. We all know that Amelia isn't going to die. Lincoln isn't going to ingest poison. And to add insult to injury the Watchmaker is still around. How many death fakes can one person be allowed.? I won't waste money on another Rhyme book. There would be no Rhyme or reason to do so.

Another winner, but some grammar gripes

Love Jeffery Deaver and totally love Lincoln Rhyme. As an editor, I appreciate the grammar "lessons" and proper usage in these novels. Mr. Deaver, I also have to say a big THANK YOU for calling out the folks who started using "ask" as a noun. I hate it, but think it has unfortunately fallen into the lexicon because of some non-native English speakers in management positions with employees who felt they had to blindly follow.

On the other hand, regarding Lincoln's insistence on following the rule that is not a rule of not ending sentences with prepositions, please desist. You can verify with Strunk and White that it is and always has been acceptable to end sentences with prepositions. Also, there are constructions called verbal phrases, such as "put up with" and "come across" that are perfectly valid as they are. Resorting to awkward constructions including "from which," "to which," and "for which" is simply unnecessary.

Finally, as an adult, Lincoln should not have to resort to looking at his hands to determine left or right, so please stop mentioning the "left-hand" or "right-hand" side of anything.

THE SKIN COLLECTOR focuses more on the crimes and the investigations than on personal stories. that being said you will still get insights in to the characters. Unlike the bone collector this killer is obsessed with skin, not bones. Rhyme is racing against time as the killer seems willing to kill and kill again. because This killer is more complex and challenges Rhymes' skills and those of his team, There are enough twists and turns to keep the book moving and you hanging on for the ride.
In any Deaver book there is a vast amount of knowledge on display about a variety of subjects. This book is not short on detail and interesting facts. If you have never read any Jeffery Deavers' books this is the one to read. It will send you back to read the rest of the Rhymes series. As for me well I am a Jeffery Deaver fan for life I have been reading his work since A Maiden's Grave (1995). His writing style is effervescent! My personal favorites Twisted( collection of short stories, ) and The Devils teardrop (1999)

About the Author

Art Chansky is an author and sportswriter who has covered basketball on Tobacco Road for more than thirty years. By day, he is a sports marketing executive who developed an all-sports competition between Duke and Carolina called the Carlyle Cup. He has written The Dean's List: a Celebration of Tar Hell Basketball and Dean Smith and Dean's Domain: The Inside Story of Dean Smith and His College Basketball Empire on North Carolina basketball and coach Dean Smith. He lives with his family on the "Duke side" of Chapel Hill.

Chapter One
Tides of March

Under the glint of the newly redesigned 2005 NCAA Tournament trophy, North Carolina’s first in twelve years, many Tar Heel fans could not fully enjoy the moment.

Their latest national championship had been achieved in the unlikeliest of ways—by a second-year head coach, who finally had assuaged the anger he caused from first turning down the UNC job in 2000, leading a largely bastardized team of players that former coach Matt Doherty had recruited.

Roy Williams was back to stay, for sure, despite almost annual offers to coach the in-flux Los Angeles Lakers. But the stepchildren who had won his first NCAA title after four previous trips to the Final Four at Kansas would not be back, that much was almost certain. Three were graduating and the other top four players were underclassmen who were all likely to enter the NBA draft.

Even after their team cut down the nets in St. Louis, returning Carolina to national prominence following a turbulent transition from the Dean Smith era, the specter of archenemy Duke loomed as large as ever. The Blue Devils still dominated the rivalry in recent years, beating Carolina in fifteen of the last eighteen meetings and running up unprecedented strings of ACC regular season and tournament championships.

And, Duke was not losing its entire team. Supposedly, only one starter, senior Daniel Ewing, was departing after All-American and ACC Player of the Year J. J. Redick reaffirmed his decision to stay for his senior year and All-ACC center Shelden Williams, the best shot-blocker and post defender in Duke history, also decided not to test the NBA.

"I want to accomplish some of the same things Carolina did," Williams said in his announcement to return.

Both programs were bringing in stellar recruiting classes for the 2005–06 season, but Duke’s was rated higher, led by McDonald’s All-Americans Greg Paulus and Josh McRoberts. Heading Carolina’s class was Tyler Hansbrough, a big white center like so many others that had anchored Roy Williams’s Kansas teams, but he would have few seasoned players to help his adjustment.

Duke was loaded. The ever-increasing Blue Devil fan base, pervasive everywhere but in the state of North Carolina, was already licking its collective chops over next year’s Final Four in Indianapolis, where the Dukies had won the first of their three national championships in 1991.

As was the case a year before, when after Roy Williams turned down the job privately and Mike Krzyzewski freaked out another first-year Duke president, Dick Brodhead, by publicly flirting with the Lakers (he had done the same to Nan Keohane in 1994 over an offer from Portland), the off-season found both basketball juggernauts in the news.

Tar Heel players Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants, and Marvin Williams, who together with seniors Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel, and Melvin Scott represented 90 percent of their team’s scoring, 80 percent of its rebounds and assists, and all but 20 of its blocked shots, indeed turned pro and were all NBA lottery picks—the first time four underclassmen from the same program had ever gone in the first round.

Duke junior Shavlik Randolph, among the most highly recruited prep players in North Carolina history and grandson of N.C. State legend Ronnie Shavlik, also applied for the NBA draft despite averaging only six points a game. The stunning announcement followed widespread reports of financial trouble in his family. His father, Kenny Randolph (a UNC graduate), had filed bankruptcy for two of the businesses he and his family had inherited from Ronnie Shavlik. Krzyzewski was miffed that Randolph did not follow his advice to stay in school and made plans to go on without him. Randolph went undrafted but hooked on as a free agent with the Philadelphia 76ers, whose general manager was former Duke defensive star Billy King.

In October, just after preseason practice began, Roy Williams got a surprise phone call from high school senior Brandan Wright of Tennessee, a consensus schoolboy All-American. The 6` 9" forward, who had visited UNC the weekend before and attended Late Night with Roy, told Williams he wanted to play for the Tar Heels. Speechless, a rare state for the talkative Carolina coach, Williams had figured that Wright was going to Duke and now had to retract a scholarship offer to Memphis forward Thaddeus Young, who eventually signed with Georgia Tech.

As Williams continued rebuilding the Carolina program, the Wright commitment marked the first player he had landed that Duke also wanted but clearly lost to the Tar Heels. Williams had been closely aligned with Hansbrough since he started recruiting him for Kansas, and fellow freshman Marcus Ginyard was scouted but not offered a scholarship by the Blue Devils. Wright, together with point guard Ty Lawson and shooting guard Wayne Ellington, gave UNC its second recruiting class of three consensus top-ten players in four years or since Felton, May, and McCants enrolled in 2002.

Duke, of course, still had its own studly list of commits who would sign letters of intent that November, including 6` 6" Jon Scheyer from Glenbrook, Illinois, who had played for the brother of Illinois coach Bruce Weber, and Ellington’s Philadelphia high school teammate Gerald Henderson. But Wright’s decision left Krzyzewski and his staff scrambling to fill the spot earmarked for a strong forward. They immediately turned their attention to unsigned New Jersey forward Lance Thomas, who had originally committed to Arizona but said he’d wait until the spring to sign.

In late October, Krzyzewski was named coach of the USA Basketball team, an appointment that promised to keep him in the headlines through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He was the first college coach to hold the position since the United States began using NBA players in the Olympics, and it fulfilled another lifetime goal for the Army graduate who always had loved international basketball, long before serving as an assistant to Chuck Daly (a former Duke assistant coach himself) on the original 1992 Dream Team in Barcelona.

With other ACC teams also losing key players, Duke was a landslide favorite to win the league. They lived up to their top-ranked billing by sweeping the preseason NIT before routing second-ranked Texas in a made-for-national-TV game at the Meadowlands behind 41 points by Redick. The Blue Devils weren’t threatened until they needed a forty-footer from Sean Dockery at the buzzer to stave off a home upset to Virginia Tech. Their best early win might have been breaking a three-game losing streak to Maryland, before which Krzyzewski pulled one of his forever-hokey but famously effective motivational ploys. The entire team signed the Duke logo on Coach K Court in Cameron Indoor Stadium, publicly indicating their intention of defending their home court against a team to whom they had lost to on that floor last season and three straight times overall.

Carolina, picked to finish sixth in the ACC, needed an ugly three-pointer by David Noel, the only returnee with any experience, to defeat low-major Gardner-Webb in its opening game. After a close home loss to Illinois in a national championship rematch for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, Carolina upset then tenth-ranked Kentucky in Lexington but went into the holiday break on a blowout loss at Southern Cal that did not bode well for the ACC season. However, several unsung players were emerging to help Hansbrough, the team’s top scorer and rebounder. A scholarly yet very readable study

This book truly brings these two highly interesting Hindu dieties to life. Kinsley clearly illustrates the various truths each deity represents within the Hindu tradition. The reader is not only left well educated about Kali and Krishna but about the rich character of the Hindu religious tradition as a whole. Perhaps the most enjoyable book I've ever read concerning Hindu religion.

Wonderful Study of Two Impressive Deities

I have always had trouble relating to Krisha, even though I read many books, commentaries and scriptures about Him, attended a Vaisnava temple for many months, and spent numerous hours chanting His mantras in an attempt to crack the mystery of why this Deity is so ravenously popular. I enjoyed the stories of His pastimes, and greatly appreciated the art and iconography that surrounded Him - but the deeper implications were simply lost for some reason.

This book really brought home to me WHY Krishna so captured the people's hearts, as it showed a completely different perspective on the energies inherant to His workship. While the familiar themes, of course, remained the same, Kinsley throws a new light on the matter that was fresh and much needed.

As a Shakta, though, I obviously also adored the latter studies of Kali as well. They also bring up aspects and interpretations of Her worship that are not too commonly presented in other texts.

While this book is an academic text, it is easy and enjoyable to read, and not at all dry.

I highly recommend this book to any student of Hindu religion and spirituality, anyone wondering "what's the deal with Krishna", or even "who is this Kali that everyone's talking about". Those who have a general intrest in world religions and mythology will eat this one up, too. Spiritual seekers who wish to expand their perspectives on how divinity can and is experienced by hundreds of million, and how the seeminly contradictory aspects of the divine can be embraced and adored will find this study an excellent read as well.

A wonderful study of two Hindu deities

Kinsley's book is perhaps the most enjoyable work on Hinduism that I've ever had the pleasure to read. In it the author both explains the history of each deity and how they crystalize certain overarching truths of the Hindu worldview. The effect is both a complex understanding of Kali and Krishna's importance within Hinduism as well as a greater appreciation of Hinduism in its totality.

Not as good as Advanced Selling Strategies.......

I have to admit that I am a big fan of Brian Tracy, have many of his audio and video programs, several books and have been to his seminars. Usually when a new Brian Tracy book or audio program comes out, I invariably buy it.

Such was the case with The Psychology of Selling. This book is 8 chapters and 219 pages. It is a condensed version of his tape program which came out in the 1980's and sold over a million copies.

I have given this book a three instead of a five because I feel that this book is not as deep as Advanced Selling Strategies which Tracy wrote nearly 10 years go. This book, The Psychology of Selling falls somewhere inbetween Advanced Selling Strategies and Be A Sales Superstar, another book written by Tracy back in 2002. My personal favorite Tracy book on sales is Advanced Selling Strategies.

This book should not be confused with the great audio tape program of the same name. That program has far more depth and material than this book.

Nonetheless, The Psychology Of Selling is good reading for a new sales person or for a Tracy fan like myself who merely wants a quick synopsis of some of Tracy's best selling ideas. This book is like an printed abridged version of Tracy's audio program.

I read the whole book in one night. What I got out of it was a reminder of Tracy's best ideas and perhaps a few things that I had forgotten. In that regard, it was a worthwhile investment.

Good book, but being familiar with Tracy, I feel he could have included more meat.

About the Author

Eric P. Holowka is a Senior Research Investigator with DuPont Central Research & Development and holds appointments as Visiting Assistant Professor in both the Materials Science & Engineering Department at Drexel University and the Chemistry Department at Haverford College. Since 2007, he has led different research discovery and/or implementation efforts within Central Research involving the application of drug delivery methodologies to a broad range of technology areas encompassing regenerative medicine, energy storage, food science, agriculture, and nutrition, which has led to the publication of over 16 patents. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in Polymer, Colloidal, and Surface Science at Carnegie Mellon University, while concurrently studying at the Center for Macromolecular Engineering under the guidance of Krzysztof Matyjaszewski as a Howard Hughes undergraduate research fellow. He then attended the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he earned his Ph.D in Materials Science & Engineering as a California NanoSystems Institute Fellow under Timothy Deming for his work on the design and implementation of self-assembled polypeptide copolymers for use in targeted drug delivery and tissue engineering. Prior to joining DuPont, he worked in research and development, intellectual property, and in-vitro trials at University of California Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Department of Biomedical Engineering and in immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology at Cornell University’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. The drug delivery technologies that Dr. Holowka developed in his time at UCSB and UCLA have been featured in Chemical & Engineering News (Technology Concentrates 2006), cited over 500 times in scientific journals and textbooks, and licensed to several biotechnology and drug delivery companies as part of their core technology platforms. He has been invited to speak at a number of universities for his work on “Rational Biomaterial Design for use in Intracellular Drug Delivery”. In 2010, he published a textbook, “Copolypeptide Vesicles: Size Control for Intracellular Drug Delivery,” which discusses core technologies behind the design and implementations of peptide-based drug delivery systems from the synthetic chemistry and materials science perspective.

Sujata K. Bhatia is a faculty member in Biomedical Engineering at Harvard University, and serves as the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering at Harvard. She is also an Associate of the Harvard Kenned School of Government, and a faculty member in the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education program on Innovation for Economic Development. She earned three bachelor’s degrees, in biology, biochemistry, and chemical engineering, and a master’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she earned her M.D. and Ph.D in bioengineering. Prior to joining Harvard, she worked in research and development, intellectual property, and clinical trials at DuPont. From 2003 to 2008, she worked to develop tissue adhesives for closure of wounds. In 2009, she spent a year on technology licensing for cancer drug discovery. In 2010 and 2011, she led clinical trials of omega-3 fatty acids for heart health. She was an invited participant in the 2005 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering and 2006 Japan-U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposia, and a co-organizer of the 2007 Japan-U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. In 2010, she published a textbook, “Biomaterials for Clinical Applications,” which discusses opportunities for both biomaterials scientists and physicians to alleviate diseases worldwide. In 2011, she published another book, “Engineering Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine.” In 2013, Sujata was awarded the Capers and Marion McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising, the highest award in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for excellence in advising. She was also awarded the Star Family Prize for Excellence in Advising, a distinguished award from Harvard University for exemplary intellectual and personal guidance of undergraduate students. In 2013, she was selected by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering for Frontiers of Engineering Education, a recognition for the most innovative engineering educators in the nation. In 2014, she was voted by the Harvard College Class of 2014 as a Harvard Yearbook Favorite Professor.

Excellent!

I'm lucky enough to have taken a class with Professor Holowka and in that class, we used excerpts from this textbook. Professor Holowka and his co-author take the complex topic of drug delivery and make it accessible to students, beginning even at the undergraduate level. The textbook is full of helpful diagrams and graphics that only further elucidate the content. Truly a must-have for any student that wants to be on the cutting edge of drug delivery!

Great Text!

I highly recommend this book for anyone with an academic interest in polymer systems and/ or drug delivery. As a recent graduate of a Materials Engineering graduate program, I can attest that the book was written at a level which caters to both a beginner and a more advanced student. It is rare that a single text can appeal to such a diverse audience. The layering of the chapters on polymer science and drug delivery builds in a way that makes the text very understandable, while still presenting advanced concepts. Many of the concepts presented are the industry standards of today. The references used are relevant and cutting edge in the field.

The real added bonus of this text is the connection between the polymer design and the practical application. The combination of the two gives this book an edge over any other in the discipline. It not only thoroughly presents the science, but there is a very “real world” feel through the presentation of applications. This book would be a great basis for a course or could be easily used as a reference guide for a student studying this subject matter.

Excellent text book w/ helpful illustrations and exercises

Professors Holowka and Bhatia make a potentially intimidating subject all the more accessible with the clarity of their writing and the quality of their pedagogy; this text book would make a helpful addition to the library of anyone with even a modicum of interest in the field.
