About the Author
Jay Devore is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at California Polytechnic State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of California at Berkeley, spent a year at the University of Sheffield in England, and finished his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University. Jay previously taught at the University of Florida and at Oberlin College and has had visiting appointments at Stanford, Harvard, the University of Washington, New York University, and Columbia University. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Chair of the Statistics Department. In addition to this book, Jay has written several widely used engineering statistics texts and a book in applied mathematical statistics. He recently coauthored a text in probability and stochastic processes. He is the recipient of a distinguished teaching award from Cal Poly, is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association , and has served several terms as an Associate Editor of the "Journal of the American Statistical Association." In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking and eating good food, tennis, and travel to faraway places. He is especially proud of his wife, Carol, a retired elementary school teacher, his daughter Allison, who has held several high-level positions in nonprofit organizations in Boston and New York City, and his daughter Teresa, an ESL teacher in New York City.

Nicholas Farnum received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of California at Irvine. He is currently a professor in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department at California State University, Fullerton. Professor Farnum has published several papers in applied and theoretical statistics and has also written texts in Quality Control and Forecasting. He is a member of the American Statistical Association and the Mathematical Association of America. In his spare time Professor Farnum enjoys cooking, playing music, and traveling.

statistics for support rather than illumination

This book did not explain the mathematical theory behind the calculation and use of the various statistical methods it presented. It merely showed how to obtain the desired results. Engineers and scientists of all people need to understand these things in order to avoid the misuse of statistical methods which is so prevalent.

How can outliers be reasonably identified? What does "degrees of freedom" really mean? Is a sample arbitrarily chosen from a group of random subsamples of a larger random sample still random? Sadly with this textbook students will learn to use statistics as a drunkard uses a lamppost: for support rather than illumination.

A second but less important omission: the homework questions make odd use of example data from real research papers. The data sets chosen are very small, even though all data sets are available for download in multiple file formats. Each question introduces a new study with a brief paragraph that somehow fails to reproducibly define the experiments actually performed. This makes for a lot of irrelevant reading and students quickly learn to skip this part of each question. Given that scientists and engineers will presumably be designing experiments, why not include some related details? Merely describing the data makes no logical contribution, except perhaps to suggest an "expected" outcome.

Learned a lot from this book

I learned a lot from this book, but it could be written a little better. More examples can be given, and rather than assuming prior knowledge, it should re-explain the abbreviations they use and some of the more technical concepts, and show clearer step by step instructions.

Excellent Resource

This is an excellent resource for NPs. I purchased this edition to replace the previous one. It provides current, evidence based guidelines in an easy to read format; particularly the use of tables to identify very important diagnotic or treatment infomation. It is not as portable like some of the smaller guidelines used by some area students, however, this is a must have resource. I honestly do not think there is a better healthcare provider guideline on the market.

PLEASE UPDATE!!!!

This is one of the best books for FNP students and all PCPs. It covers every aspect of a condition from diagnosis through follow up. Very detailed and easy to read. Softcover makes it easy to handle on your lap or one handed. It is a shame that an updated edition has yet to be released. Having been printed in 2003, some of the information is outdated. PLEASE release an updated copy!!!

About the Author
Sibylle von Olfers was an art teacher in East Prussia at the turn of the century as well as a member of the Catholic Order of St. Elizabeth. Sieglinde Schoen-Smith is a quilter whose quilted interpretation of Mother Earth and Her Children captured the coveted Best in Show award at the 2006 International Quilt Show in Houston. She lives in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.�Jack Zipes is the foremost expert on German folklore in the United States. He is a professor of German literature at the University of Minnesota and has edited, contributed to, and translated more than 50 books, essays, and plays on German folklore, including The Norton Anthology of Children's Literature and The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Just a retelling of the Root Children

If you are a fan of gentle stories and old-fashioned children's books, such as those used for Waldorf education, you've probably read Story of the Root Children #1491 by Sibylle Von Olfers. It's a lovely story, so I searched by other books by the same author and came across this title, and ordered it sight unseen.

The book was not what I expected. It is not a new story by the same author, but rather a paraphrased retelling of The Story of the Root Children. Instead of the original illustrations, the pictures are photographs of a quilt that was created based on the original book. I did not realize that "Mother Earth and Her Children" and "The Story of the Root Children" were one and the same, I wish that was a little more clear in the product description.

Don't get me wrong, the quilt is absolutely amazing and spectacular. I'm in awe of how anyone was able to create it, the quilt is a work of art. The dust jacket can be removed and has a little poster on the backside of the full quilt. If you are a fan of quilts or quilting, you will probably appreciate the book just for the beauty of the quilt. And if you are a huge fan of the original Root Children, you may also want this book just to see this lovely "fan art," if you will.

However, if you're like me, and are looking for Waldorf-style picture books, you'll probably prefer the original story with Von Olfer's gentle watercolor illustrations. There's not really a reason to have both of the books, as it is the same story, and basically the same pictures (the quilt is simply a sewn version of the original watercolors.)

This book does have one advantage over the original in that the colors are brighter and the paper quality (at least on the hardcover) is very good and glossy. It's a better quality book than The Story of the Root Children I purchased on Amazon , which did not have the highest quality reproductions and was a little grainy and washed out in places. Also, if you have a very young child you may prefer the shorter text in this version. Otherwise, plan on picking up the original version.

Delightful for children, nature lovers and artists!

I bought this book for a quilter-friend who is a new grandmother. Now I want it for myself. On every level this book is a treasure: as gorgeous textile art, as sweet children's literature, as a wonder-filled treatise on the changing seasons. It's a hopeful book of innocent beauty and charm.

This "quilted" fairy tale is so magnificently illustrated! Seglinde Schoen Smith holds nothing back in her quest for detailing each and every one of the teeny, tiny bugs, flowers and children. I love the way they each have their own little jobs to do. Wonderfully done. .

A lyrical, engrossing mystery with a fascinating setting.

Like Death at the Crossroads, the first book in Dale Furutani's Samurai Trilogy, Jade Palace Vendetta is set in 17th century Japan and features lyrical prose, haiku to lead in each chapter, and one of my favorite fictional characters, Matsuyama Kaze. (Last name first)
Kaze is that extreme loner--a ronin--a samurai left masterless after Japan's civil war made Ieyasu Tokugawa the triumphant ruler of Japan. In many ways, Kaze reminds me of a Knight Errant from my own country's history--a medieval knight who wandered in search of adventures--a person of a chivalrous and/or adventurous spirit.
Kaze has a prototype in American mystery fiction also. Remember the quote from Raymond Chandler? "Down these mean streets must go a man who is not himself mean." Kaze fits this description, his "mean streets" being the Tokaido Road, one of the most famous roads in Japanese history.
Kaze is a great swordsman, a terrific strategist, an honest and honorable man who is saved from stuffiness by an appealing sense of humor. I'm really in awe of this character, and of the author's amazing feat in creating such an attractive and intriguing character out of someone who goes around killing people with his sword. In this novel, an interesting and convincing distinction is made between killing and murdering. Kaze would never murder, nor would he kill anyone who didn't deserve it, but he does still manage to knock off a considerable number of bad guys.
Early in the novel, Kaze gets involved in a sword fight. I would not have thought I'd ever be compelled to read every stroke of a sword fight, but I watched the whole thing in breathless anticipation of the outcome. It starts like this: "The new attacker brought his sword down, and Kaze brought his blade up to parry the blow. The sword blades, both finely polished and shimmering silver in the murky light, came together with a tremendous clang, and Kaze was pushed back a step by the combined momentum of the running man and the force of his overhead blow."
Lovely stuff.
The year is 1603 and Kaze is continuing the quest that motivated him in Death at the crossroads --searching for the kidnapped daughter of Kaze's former master and his lady. On the way, he becomes involved in other people's problems and finds himself in great danger The reader also learns more about Kaze's past and his training as a samurai in this book, and an enthralling past it is.
I was interested to learn that a merchant in that period was considered one of the lowest of the low. There's a fascinating character named Hishigawa, a merchant who fancies himself a Samurai. A merchant, by the way, could not kill anyone and get away with it, but a Samurai could.
There's a wonderful scene under a waterfall of Kaze's first meeting with the Lady, and another most subtle and touching scene between the two that creates powerful sexual tension out of one small action on the Lady's part.
There's also an appearance by Elder Grandma, who showed up in Death at the Crossroads wearing a headband with the kanji character for revenge emblazoned upon it. Elder Grandma has attitude and she knows what to do with it! In return for information Kaze wants from her, she demands Kaze's assistance in finding out who killed her grandson, Mototane, which Kaze agrees to do. He is as surprised as I was to find out the identity of the murderer!
This novel, like its predecessor, Death at the Crossroads, is a literary novel with a mystery at its heart. It's not a traditional mystery, yet there is a whodunnit in it, and a truly amazing conclusion. It's also a beautifully written, engrossing tour de force.
I can hardly wait for book three.

A fantastic, engrossing historical mystery

For a man who wasn't there, Furutani has an excellent ability to transport a reader to the distant, rather mysterious past.
This is the second in his Samurai trilogy, something I was mournfully aware of as I picked it up. I did not want to be 2/3 of the way done with the books, but paradoxically can't wait for the third!
Matsuyama Kaze is about as untraditional a protagonist of a mystery as it gets-- yet I can think of no one better suited to what he does. He is intelligent, intriguing, focused. He is a master swordsman, and in fact does end up using his sword a good deall, but he is ever honorable and has just the right combination of self-deprication and humor.
A ronin in a tumultuous time, when the Tokugawa shogunate has just come to power, he is a man on a mission: find the daughter of his defeated Lord. In Jade Palace Vendetta, Matsuyama Kaze is drawn almost against his will to defend a traveling merchant. At Hishigawa the merchant's home, he finds more than he expected. The wife of Hishgawa remains hidden, yet the head of the household, a female servant named Ando, avoids Matsuyama Kaze whenever possible.
Meanwhile, the reappearance of a certain memorable trio from the first book of the trilogy, Death at the Crossroads, spurs Matsuyama Kaze to action. He comes closer than ever before to finding the daughter of his Lord, and remembers his few painful encounters with the Lady.
This has got to be one of the best mysteries of the year.

A teriffic historical mystery

Europe considers the year to be 1603, but Japanese see it as the eighth year of Keicho. Life is finally quieting down following the battle of Sekigahara where the Takugawa clan became the rulers of Japan. Fifty thousand samurai were left without a master. Many such as Matsuyama Kaze became ronins, a homeless warrior. In the case of Matsuyama, he searches for the missing nine-year old daughter of his former Lord and Lady.
After three years of futility, Matsuyama finally finds a clue. He now seeks three people who most likely can provide him with answers. As he travels down The Tokaido Road, he rescues a merchant under attack by several bandits. He safely escorts his new but temporary employer home and receives gold in payment.
He goes back to his hunt for the trio of people with answers. When he catches up to the threesome, he learns they have a personal vendetta against the person Matsuyama just rescued. Still, they agree to help him if the ronin can learn what happened to their grandmother's grandson, who disappeared on the merchant's estate.
THE JADE PALACE VENDETTA, the second novel in Dale Furutami's Samurai trilogy, is a remarkable work of historical fiction that brings to life a part of the Japanese heritage not seen by westerners. The descriptions are so well drawn, the audience feels they have been magically transported to an exotic locale. Cleverly integrated within the story line of the well-designed mystery are folklore tales, legends, and customs. Anyone who takes pleasure in a wonderful work of historical fiction that makes a different era and culture come to life needs to read this novel and its predecessor.

If Phoebe Castro can keep her grades up and have another stellar cross-country season, her dream of attending USC with her best friends is only a track scholarship away. (This is the summary from the back of the book, I thought it was to great to pass up, and I don't think summarizing is one of my strong points!)

I don't even know where to start! I guess first off, I should say that I've been looking forward to reading this book since I first heard about it, I'm a huge fan of Greek Mythology. So, to say that I was expecting a lot going into it, doesn't quite cover it. I don't know if anyone else does this, but I always look at the thickness I have left of a book to read once I start a good reading spell, and I either think two things; 1.) okay I only have this much more to go. Or 2.) oh no! This is all that's left! This book definitely falls under the later. I loved Childs writing style, and her interruption of the Greek gods. What is so good about this book is the reality mixed with the myth. I mean, we have a honest portrayal of a girl struggling to make sense of the world, and it works even a mythical one. The characters are distinctive, and each portrayal of their god or goddess remains in tact within the distinctiveness. What else can I say, I absolutely loved it. I loved the story, Phoebe, her struggles and triumphs, and of course the catalyst to any good romance, the boys. What else could you want?

A Girl's Knock-off of Percy Jackson

Proof that when a book makes it big, all the other publishers jump on the bandwagon, Oh. My. Gods. is very similar to The Lightning Thief. . . . Except it's written for girls.

Phoebe's mom goes to Greece to meet her late husband's extended family and comes back with a fiance. Against, her will, Phoebe is forced to move to a small island near Greece where said fiance is the headmaster of a small school.

Based on the title of the book and the book I compared it to, I'm sure you've already realized that the school is a school for the offspring of the Greek gods. Differing from the Percy Jackson series, Phoebe is not half-god (at least... not in the majority of the story), and therein lies the crux of the story. Everyone hates her because she's normal, and she has a crush on the most popular guy in school, who just happens to be dating the most popular girl in school, who just happens to be a spiteful bitch.

Despite its unsurprising storyline, this was a decent read. It only took a few hours, and it's entertaining. Finding out that Phoebe's crush has a heroes' complex and literally cannot pass up someone who needs help is a welcome and funny surprise for the reader. Seeing the stepsister and Phoebe settle their differences (but not become best friends) is refreshing (although perhaps outweighed by Phoebe's new best friend throwing aside her 10-year dislike of the Phoebe's crush in a matter of minutes).

Overall, as a fluff book, this is a good read. There's romance and betrayal. Lots of teen angst. An evil stepsister. Loyal best friends. New best friends. Perfect matches. A bet reminiscent of the late '90s (think She's All That.) All the components necessary for a good teen read. But if you're looking for something life-changing and mind-altering, you might want to keep looking.

I couldn't put it down!

Poor Phoebe is dragged off to a Greek island, away from her best friends, only to learn her new stepfather is headmaster at a school for the descendents of the Greek gods. Unless she can keep up her grades and make the track team, she'll lose her scholarship to USC and the chance to return home for college. But how does a girl hold her own against super-kids determined to make her life miserable? And then there's her track nemisis Griffin, too gorgeous for even a Greek god.

Luckily I started this book on a Saturday afternoon because I read it in one sitting and immediately wanted more. (Yes, I've heard there's a sequel coming but not quickly enough!!!)I loved Phoebe and her friends, both old and new. Mythology is cleverly woven into the story but never takes over. Although it's a young adult book, it's so original and fun, even adults will enjoy it. Buy it. Now.
