The Invisible Husband, by Cari Hislop

Miss Eve Venables knows nothing about the man who’s persuaded her parents to deliver her to a country church in the middle of the night, not even his name. Her parents have wisely withheld his identity knowing their daughter would hunt him down and then give the man cause to change his mind.

Four men in black hooded cloaks escort Eve up the aisle where she’s married by proxy to a man named Adam Harold Damian Latham, sixth Earl of Latham. The name Latham is familiar, but she can’t remember why. A feeling of being watched sends a chill up her spine and over her scalp. For six months invisible eyes have been following her everywhere. Is her husband the black cloaked figure who gently placed the ring on her finger or was her demon-Lord waiting in a cold castle for her to be delivered up into his bed like a ritual offering to a blood thirsty god? Her mind whirling with plot lines from The Castle of Otranto; Eve reluctantly agrees to become Lady Latham, but she’s no simpering Miss, and if His Lordship thinks he’s purchased a biddable wife he’ll quickly discover he’s mistaken.

Hilarious, campy Regency fun
By esm4
Maybe I'm reading these wrong, but I think Cari Hislop writes her books with her tongue firmly in her cheek. If you read this as a serious romance, it's not very good, but I read it as a farce, a light-hearted jab at historical romance conventions. I've read four of her books and every one of them is similar. They are fast reads, are laugh out loud funny, and will keep you smiling and sighing throughout. There were a few grammar and spelling errors, but not too many. In the spirit of the story, I would describe the characters as poor Adam and his heart (the creature in his chest, wailing for its mistress), and Eve (her own heart desperately leaping toward Adam). Honestly, don't pick up this book thinking it is a "normal" Regency romance. It isn't, it's something far rarer, a well-executed comedy.

This was simply fun
By M. Miller
I ran into Cari's work when I googled "Regency Romance". One of the sites listed took me to her home page, where I read a free book online. That one was fun, and she had a bunch more or sale on her site, but I wanted to read it on my kindle so I came over here and typed in her name and viola. I picked a book at random without even reading the blurb and read the sample. The sample was sufficient for me to buy the thing and stay up until 2am reading it.

The book was fun, plain and simple. It made me laugh out loud in a few places, and I wanted to get to the end to see the resolution. I loved the epilogue, and I sighed with contentment, which is all I ask a romance to do for me. I love Cari's writing style, and her turn of phrase. I like her world, this book meshed with the first one I read, and I'm get the feeling that the more of her I read, they might all intertwine slightly. That wouldn't bother me in the least.

Now for the cons- I gave the story itself four stars instead of five because the hero was a bit of a whiner. That bugged me. I didn't mind that he had self confidence issues, that made him real. I didn't mind that he ended up looking like a dork in several places, that made him human. He was a little too free with the tears, and in a couple of places, he acted more like my preteen son than a 37 year old man.

The villians- that whole scenario reminded me of the gothic romance the characters refer to on occasion, but the assault was very well written and the resolution was satisfying, redeeming the hero from some of his whini-ness.

The hero's brother was awesome. I'm hoping that I come across a book just for him.

The story itself out of the way- now I'm going to talk about the formatting, etc. I would have given that a 2 or 3 stars if it were possible to make seperate ratings. At first, I thought Cari just had problems with writing very long paragraphs occasionally, but I eventaully realized that there was a formatting issue. It was mildly irritating, especially in one place where an entire conversation was one long run-on paragraph. It pulled me out of the fairy tale for a while until I slogged through it.

Also, she dropped a couple of words in a few places. The editing wasn't horrible, her grammer was good and overall high quality, but the text could have been beta'd one more time.

Overall, I enjoyed it- I love any book that makes me stay up rediculously late to get to the ending. I love a book that can make me laugh, and I love a book that makes me smile rediculously at the end. This had all of that. I plan on getting more of her books as my budget allows.

MY HEART IS CRYING FOR MORE! MORE!
By Nana lost in a book
This is another wonderful story by Cari Hislop. The story of Adam & Eve, not original names but the story is still wonderful.
There are some places your heart will want to cry, also, just as Adam's does. I have noticed since reading these books a second time Cari Hislop writes a lot of the man's emotions into her stories. Her books are fantastic. I recommend the six books currently in e-books by Cari Hislop.
