Published as a limited edition in 1936, Miguel Antonio Otero's The Real Billy the Kid: With New Light on the Lincoln County War is a landmark biography of the infamous Western outlaw otherwise known as William H. Bonney, Jr.—his brief childhood, gunfights, encounters with the Apache Indians, entanglement in the murderous feud known as the Lincoln County War, and finally his friendship with the man who ultimately killed him, Sheriff Pat Garrett.
Otero knew his subject at first-hand: “I liked The Kid very much. . . nothing would have pleased me more than to have witnessed his escape.” Much of his account is based on personal interviews with involved parties. Interweaving documentary techniques, ethnography, and elements of autobiography, Otero's study paints a complex landscape of Southwestern politics and culture after the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It is the first narrative to depict the outlaw's cultural and political relationship with Mexican Americans, to whom he was the mythic hero Bilito. In a detailed critical introduction, John-Michael Rivera argues that Otero's account undermines the standard Euro-American image of Billy the Kid and thereby subversively questions the rhetoric of Manifest Destiny that swept across the United States during the late nineteenth century.

This may be the best book on Billy the Kid

Many books have been written about Billy the Kid and his exploits in New Mexico's Lincoln County War. Virtually all of these books, however, have relied on the same basic source of information, that being Pat Garrett's "The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid." Garrett, of course, was the man who killed Billy, and his book was written in part to justify the manner in which he had dispatched the Kid. Sadly, although based partly on the facts as Garrett understood them, his book reads more like a "penny dreadful," than a true biography, casting serious doubts on his book and those which followed.

Fortunately for today's readers, Miguel Otero's book, "The Real Billy the Kid," doesn't trace its roots back to the Garrett book. Even better, it addresses Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War from an entirely new and unique perspective. Consider the following: 1) Otero actually knew Billy the Kid, although only slightly; 2) Unlike Pat Garrett, Miguel Otero had no axe to grind in writing his biography and, therefore, didn't need to embellish the story; 3) Since most of the people living in New Mexico at the time of the Lincoln County War were Mexicans, as is Otero, this book looks at the events of that war from an entirely unbiased point of view and a particularly unique perspective; and 4) In writing this book, the author interviewed those people, still living, who actually knew or were friends with Billy the Kid and who were living in and around Lincoln County at the time of the "war."

This all led to what would appear to be a factual account with a minimum of fluff; Otero simply tells it like it happened. And here are a few other things which struck me about this book and the way it is written: 1) It puts the characters involved in the "war" in proper perspective and in the setting of their times; 2) It provides personal information about some of the participants in the war which I have never seen before; 3) It went on to explain what became of some of those who survived the war. The only disappointment to me about the book was in the way it ended. The author was discussing his interviews with those who knew the Kid, the questions he asked them and their answers. I kept thinking: "Ask this. Ask that." What valuable sources. I would have liked to have known even more. Bottom line - It's a good book and makes interesting reading.

The Real Billy the Kid, by Miguel Antonio Otero

There have been over 800 literary and cinematic representations of "Billy the Kid" that present varying view from murdering desperado to Robin Hood of the Southwest (Walter Noble Burns). Otero's book is the first from an Hispanic viewpoint (he was Territorial Governor 1892-1906). Otero personally met William Henry Bonney Jr. Most of the fictional representations used Billy as a means to their ends of telling a story. [Most Westerns were written by Easterners to provide entertainment that is more modern than the Song of Roland.] Otero's book contrasts from the Pat Garrett narrative, and is little known. The 'Introduction' displays Rivera's erudition, but "romance" or "tragedy" is best left to the reader.

The Lincoln County War was caused by the commercial rivalry between the Dolan-Murphy faction (allied to the Sante Fe Ring) and the McSween-Tunstall faction. Otero had his reasons for this book, originally published in 1936 (p.xxxv). So to did Garrett and Upson (p.xxxvii). The 'Foreword' uses an unnamed source to claim that "Billy the Kid had no gun". That is unbelievable! Billy was an escaped convict condemned to hang; he would never be without a gun handy, night or day, since his life depended on a gun. Pat Garrett presented Otero with an autographed copy of his book (p.5).

Chapter I tells of Billy's early years. He was often a nice boy, but had a terrible temper and was dangerous when angry. The stories of Billy's early life show his willingness to kill. Billy was also a "first-class gambler" (p.13). Billy gained from other's winnings (p.14). Chapter II tells of his fights with the Apaches. It was the Lincoln County War of 1878 that made Billy's reputation (Chapter III). The Murphy-Dolan company sold cattle to the government, some of it alleged to have come from John Chisum's big ranch (pp.28-29). Otero was a business ally of the Tunstall-McSween Company. One fraudulent scheme involved cattle (pp.31-32). Success went to the faction that was close to the politicians (p.45). Chapters V and VI tell of Billy's criminal activities.

Chapter VII tells of Pat Garrett's ambush of Billy and his gang at Fort Sumner in December 1880. Billy escaped with most of his gang. Chapter VIII has the statements from those who knew Billy and like him. Mrs. Susan Barber, the widow of Alexander McSween, told what happened to her attorney (p.93). Chapter IX has stories from Lincoln, like Hijinio Salazar who survived the attack on the McSween home. Garrett shot people when they were disadvantaged (p.98). George Coe told of his memories, and Frank Coe too (Chapter X). Testimony about Billy's death is in Chapter XI. Martin Chavez tells his memories of Billy and the Lincoln County War (Chapter XII). Billy was one of the kindest ... he was not blood-thirsty (p.126). Billy "never killed a native citizen of New Mexico" (p.129). Otero tells when he met The Kid (Chapter XIII). Garrett and his deputies captured The Kid and his gang, and brought them to the railroad station at Las Vegas. Otero was on the train to Santa Fe and found Billy likable (p.133). Chapter XIV concludes this history by quoting Pat Garrett's story. Chapter XV provides a postscript about the principals of the Lincoln County War. As Governor Otero banned John A. Riley form Santa Fe. [This book provides another view into a minor event that was greatly magnified by writers to provide entertainment and a distraction to the reading public.]

Billy the Kid fans need to read this book. It has a totally different perspective, and there are many. This is more "history" than the usual "cowboy history" ones sees on the subject of Billy. I recommend it.

From The Association of Christian Teachers - March 2010 The story of 'Our Easter Play' is seen through Peter's eyes, with an adult-read narrative. Peter, John and the woman who recognises Peter have simple speaking parts and there are unlimited miming parts as the other disciples and the 'crowds'. The four songs are set to well-known nursery rhyme tunes such as Three Blind Mice, and cover the journey to the Upper Room, Jesus washing the disciples' feet, Peter and John finding the tomb empty and the breakfast on the beach. There is no song about the crucifixion, but three suitable songs are suggested if required. The music is melody line only with guitar chords and the song words and music are photocopiable. Clear stage directions appear throughout. .The book includes a useful list of props and, for some reason, the template for a paper fish. (A line drawing for the suggested friezes of the Easter Garden and the post-resurrection lake scene might have been more useful for the artistically challenged!) There are no children on stage during the Good Friday narrative, and suggestions for appropriate Easter music at this point are included. Notes explain which FS early learning goals and KS1 RE requirements are covered. At my school, Brian Ogden's Nursery Rhyme Nativity was successfully and enthusiastically performed by Year 1 so I know the idea works! This is a faithful retelling of the events surrounding Easter, but with no explanation of why Jesus was arrested and put to death. This would need to be covered in another way. About the Author

Shannon L. Maynard lives in Colorado with her five girls where she is a legal assistant by day and an author by night. In between working and writing she can be found driving kids to soccer, folding mountains of pink laundry, or eating her weight in chocolate. Other addictions include shoe shopping, reading YA, and Australian and British accents (which may be partly to blame for her massive crush on Thor). If she had one wish it would be for more hours in the day to spend enjoying all of the above. Okay, everything except the laundry.

Shannon studied art and criminology before getting a license in cosmetology, but eventually wound up an expert daydreamer; a skill that occasionally leads to getting lost while driving, but has been a huge asset to her love for writing. Her debut novel WICKED LUCK is set to release June 2015 and is the first book in the Wicked Luck Trilogy.

Good plot, but nothing compared to book one

I absolutely loved the first book so when i heard the sequel had been released i grabbed it immediately. I was even more hooked when i saw the amazing cover.

And while the character development starts where we left off and continues at the perfect place, i found myself getting increasingly annoyed, not with Ava's inability to choose between her two men, but the way she plays them both. I understand that she was in love with them both but it felt like she changed her mind as soon as she was with the other guy every time and i felt myself getting annoyed with it. Despite this i persevered and found myself able to look past it and enjoy the plot that Shannon has continued to develop. The other characters were a great addition to the story line and now and then i did feel myself liking a few of the romance moments between Ava and Dax.

Of course, it does end on a cliffhanger that leaves us wanting book 3. I was slightly disappointed at the cliffhanger as the author had spent the previous chapters building up this perfect ending and instead of leaving me desperately wanting more, i found myself slightly annoyed that i didn't like the cliff hanger ending. Maybe it was because book one left me with such high expectations...

I received a copy of Wicked Fate from the publisher for an honest review...
Wicked Fate picks up where Wicked Luck ended. I loved the cliffhanger ending of Wicked Luck and couldn't wait to get a copy of Wicked Fate.
But I was disappointed in this one. Wicked Fate a lot more action and turns then Wicked Luck had and that is what gives it the 4 star rating. I found myself getting increasing annoyed at Ava and Roxy and how their characters turned out. I just felt that there could have been a lot more. The story started out promising, dragged in the middle and picked up at the end.
But the Dax and Preston were still great characters. Even though they both loved Ava, they still worked together to make sure they all stayed safe. The triangle going between them didn't cause them to go off the deep end. Kirk and Anna seem like they have a back story and little pieces of their story seemed to come up throughout the book.
The end of the book was great. I love the cliffhanger because it is making me want the next book.

The perfect sequel to Wicked Luck

Oh. My. Gosh. This is the sequel to Wicked Luck, which I reviewed a few days ago. Click here to read my review of Wicked Luck. Wicked Luck ends in a dramatic cliffhanger, and Wicked Fate picks up right in the middle of the action.
There’s so much to talk about, so I’ll start with what I loved about this book. I loved the romance of it all. In Wicked Luck, in terms of vying for Ava’s affection, it was Dax against Ava’s memory of Preston. Now, it’s Dax against Preston, head on. It’s this love triangle that makes up most of the conflict of the novel, as both guys love her, and it’s up to Ava to choose who she wants to be with. There are amazing scenes with both guys taking her on island dates, and, as the co-pilot Kirk keeps mentioning, reminds me of The Bachelorette, where all that’s missing is a rose to give to the chosen guy. To be honest, as the truth comes to light, it might even be hard to choose a guy to side with. (Team Dax? Team Preston? It’s a hard choice!!!) Once again, the narrative is spot on, and you can clearly imagine the events of the novel in your head as if you were there. There’s also more drama with the tribes, which is exactly what I had been hoping for. We get a backstory on how they came to live on the island, and their beliefs come to light and spark the climax of the novel.
Now, when it comes to things I didn’t like, it was mainly a few characterization issues and continuity problems, the latter of which may be fixed in the editing process before the release. In terms of continuity, there was a scene in which Dax asked Ava what she loved about Preston and about past dates they went on, all of which were things that Dax should have known from Ava’s diary. Maybe he just wanted to hear it from her mouth, which would make sense in the context of the scene. When it comes to characterization, I wish we could have gotten to know Anna more. In both books, she’s just a side character who doesn’t say much, and somehow comes to have an important, but still minor role in the grand scheme of things. Also, Roxy, Ava’s sister, could have been fleshed out more. We get to see that she’s bitter and angry that she’s lost everything while Ava seems to have everything better, leading to a huge case of sibling rivalry between the two, but we don’t really get to see much of her after her dramatic exit, and by then it’s too late to get into her head much. Bummer.
I highly recommend this series, and now I’m desperately hoping for another book, because, as I said earlier, this ends in a cliffhanger, and I’m still on edge after reading that ending! As stated in my review of Wicked Luck, this is a book that anyone could love. There’s a love triangle, plenty of action, tragedy, and plenty of revelations throughout the entire book. While the first book may have been lacking in excitement and conflict, this book is full of it. If you want to read a unique romance, Wicked Luck and Wicked Fate are the books for you.

In her enigmatic self-portraits, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) depicted herself as an enchanting, exotic yet martyred woman, and these candid letters, written between 1924 and 1948, flesh out that image with revealing personal glimpses. They cover her hospitalization after a near-fatal bus accident in 1925, which left her with lifelong spinal and foot injuries; her separation from and reconciliation with husband Diego Rivera in 1935, prompted by the muralist's affair with her sister Christina; Frida's affair with Hungarian-born photographer Nicholas Murray; her divorce from Rivera in 1939 and remarrige to him a year later. These highly articulate, witty letters, by turns touching, playful, desperate and mystical, present a woman who lived for her art, when she was not tending to the needs of her moody husband. Get to know the real Frida Kahlo

This book contains a collection of more than eighty important letters and other documents written by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to friends, fans, family, politicians and lovers. These letters, written between 1924 and 1948, presents another kind of self-portrait revealing Kahlo's inter most personal feelings about her art, politics, tragedies and events in her life. This book also includes poems by Kahlo, her lecture analyzing her award winning painting "Moses" and an essay about her husband, the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The book begins with a 3 page chronology. There are only a few illustrations of sketches in this book and only one photograph of Kahlo. There are no illustrations or discussion of her paintings. The letters have been reproduced in their original format as much as possible, to include her own "Spanglish" language, other foreign words and the profanities which she often used. This book is recommended reading if you want to get to know and feel the emotions of the real Frida Kahlo.

I really enjoy this book... You can open it to any page and read something that captures your attention. I love Frida's way with words. The book feels really personal. I am inlove with it. Any frida kahlo fan will definitely enjoy it. Even non-fans will, since Frida is so witty and charming.

If you enjoy reading about Frida Kahlo this is a great addition. The letters are kept in their original format as well as possible. The book is easy to read and laid out beautifully. It is insightful in ways that other biographical books have not been so far. If you love Frida Kahlo this is a great book to purchase.

An academic study of the failure of anticorruption efforts

This is an excellent book. Its academic / sociological approach may put off some lay readers, but that would be too bad. The subject, and the message, are both very important. In many ways, this book is similar to "The Appearance of Impropriety: How the Ethics Wars Have Undermined American Government, Business and Society," but although this book is somewhat less accessible to general readers it is certainly stronger from a social-science standpoint. An excellent book, well worth reading for anyone interested in why repeated efforts to stamp out political corruption have borne such mixed (at best) results.
