Things Your Mother Never Told You: A Woman's Guide to Sexuality, by Kim Gaines Eckert

"Sexuality offers important lessons about God, about ourselves, about the life that he is calling us to now, as well as a vision of the life that he has ultimately created us for―one of constant love and physical union with him in eternity." Sexuality is core to our personhood. Conversations about sex and sexuality matter, because they are really about our identity as people created in the image of God. So why aren't Christians talking about it? In this frank exploration of all aspects of what it means to be a sexual being created by God, psychologist Kim Gaines Eckert explores common myths that we have absorbed from popular culture and distorted religious teaching. As women, in particular, we are flooded with images of disconnecting, degrading sexuality. It is easy to develop distorted views, but our sexuality as women is a reflection of how we have been created in God’s image. Some myths that Eckert debunks include:

  • Sex is god or sex is evil
  • Sexuality should not be talked about
  • You must experience erotic sexual satisfaction to be fulfilled
Neither our identity as sexual beings nor the gift of sexual pleasure is the thing itself. God has created us for union with Himself, and sex and sexuality are signs that point us toward that ultimate good. Allow this book to be your companion into a journey to deeper self-understanding as you explore things you may never have discussed with anyone else.

"Redemptive, wise, practical, honest and tender, this book is a welcome addition to the conversation about women's sexuality." (Sarah Bessey, author of Jesus Feminist)

"Kim Eckert deepens the discussion about sex to a profound exploration of our sexual soul. Practical and redemptive, this book explores who you are as a woman intimately connected to a loving God, to yourself and to others. Truly a provocative, fabulous read!" (Marnie C. Ferree, LMFT, CSAT, author of No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction)

"A refreshingly grace-filled and intelligent discussion on the ever-daunting topic of sex. . . . Read this book, share it with friends and pass it around. Not only will you find things your mother never told you, you will find things society, church and culture never told you. These pages contain a no-nonsense honesty that, if applied, will change our lives and the lives of those we seek to love." (Shayne Moore, author of Refuse to Do Nothing)

The mystery of Sex
By skhg
"Sex" has always been a topic that was not discussed openly in my life. A good wife endured it, never admitting to enjoying it. But, reading this book has taught me that God created it for our enjoyment as well as procreation, and explaining that sexuality is more than the sex act.
Today I hear so many strange things about other people's sexuality and I don't understand or even imagine what or why. Our culture doesn't understand; therefore, they declare these people evil. This book doesn't condone this different behavior but does offer understanding in it.
I recommend this book to men and women to understand the true meaning of this gift given to us by God. Dr. Eckert explains things I never knew and always wondered about so well.

Blunt, Beautiful, and Hopeful
By Amazon Customer
Kim Gaines Eckert approaches the topic of female sexuality from emotional, historical, psychological, and theological perspectives. She masterfully disspells myths about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be feminine, and offers a countercultural perspective of what true feminine power is. She uses blunt, frank language, yet frames that language to the purpose of her book: grounding our sexuality in Christ. Kim reminds us of the beauty of our sexuality, even when it's wounded, or fractured. And she offers hope of redemption and restoration, of rebuilding a healthy view of our sexuality as it pertains to being an image of God, as were originally created.

A redemptive look at female sexuality
By Emily Aikins
Kim Gaines Eckert tackles the daunting topic of sexuality with expertise, wisdom, practicality, and grace. Dr. Eckert dispels common societal myths regarding sexuality by pointing us to the wholeness and redemption of a Christ-centered view of sexuality. Dr. Eckert looks at sexuality from all aspects of personhood in order to make this read relevant to all women, regardless of their present station in life. This book will help us broaden our view of sexuality from just what we do physically with our bodies to who we are at our core: gendered beings created in the image of God. As a therapist specializing in issues of sexuality, I plan to recommend this book to many clients; as a woman who is passionate about the redemptive and life-giving nature of Christ, I cannot wait to recommend this book to my friends.
