A great debut -- fast, fun, and imaginative!

The size of the electronic gaming market is well over $50 Billion and some significant and growing portion of that is due to the engaging, social segment known as multiplayer online gaming. Shepherd Moon perfectly captures why these games are so compelling. Cooper's book is immersive, surprising, and fun. I absolutely enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next installment(s)!
This book is everything you'd expect in the fresh breakout LitRPG genre: It explores a fictional world that's done in imaginative detail; it's creative; and it's a page turner. There's a reason why this genre has exploded in other parts of the world and is gaining traction in the West. I think Cooper's effort here will take its place at the forefront of that popularity surge -- and deservedly so.
In my grasping for a higher compliment to convey, the only thing that comes to mind is: This story makes me wish I could go out and buy (and begin playing) this game! I've given authors five stars for experiences I didn't relish as much as the immersive fun this book provided. If you're at all a gamer (and probably even if you're not), you will have fun reading this book -- whether you're 16, 60, or somewhere in between.

Pleasant, Immersive, Hard To Put Down

A MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game can be like an alternative life, the more immersive the game the more true this is. The author captures this concept and presents it like a master... no doubt in part for his long time profession creating and managing this type of game world. The possibilities are endless.

Worth going outside your comfort zone for!

I must first state that I am neither a science fiction fan; nor am I a Gamer in any sense of the word. I have, however, been an avid reader my entire life. My genre is normally historical based novels. Secondly, I will acknowledge that I am acquainted with Mr Cooper, and have known him for many years. I acquired this book mainly out of curiosity, and without Mr Cooper's knowledge so that, if I did not like it, I could quietly say nothing.
I was not in any way prepared for how much I enjoyed Shepherd Moon. Gary writes with an confident style that is easy to read, and encourages the reader to concentrate on events occuring that will affect the main character, Duncan. I was quickly drawn into the story of a man being introduced into a new worldwide game that has more levels than Gary could have possibly covered in one volume. So far as character develpopment, Duncan is the only character that even comes close to 3 dimensional. This is okay, though, because many of the characters online are best represented by two dimensions, and some may even be computer generated one dimensional beings. The reader, along with Duncan, will have to find out as the game progresses who is real and who is a programmed part of the game.
I have no doubt that Gamers and SciFi readers will enjoy this book, but, I would encourage others like myself to give it a chance. I think you may be pleasantly surprised.
In conclusion, even though Shepherd Moon is WAY outside my normal book subject choice, I applaud Gary for a job well done, and anxiously await the next installment in this series.
